Every so often a forgotten superstar is rediscovered somewhere in the world. It happened to Cesaria Evora, Boubacar Traoré and the gentlemen and lady of the Buena Vista Social Club. Unfortunately, the Romanian singer Romica Puceanu could not wait for that. In 1996 she was killed in a car accident at the age of 70. The interpreter of the gypsy song was famous in her own country, but hardly known
… across the border. She was a woman of the people and sang about life in the Mahalas, the Romanian gypsy neighborhoods. Not something the Romanian government liked to advertise with. Fortunately, good recordings have been preserved. This album was recorded in 1964, but the sound quality is very good. The virtuoso musicians of The Gore Brothers give Romica Puceanu plenty of room to excel and also play the stars from heaven themselves. Now it is up to the listener to rediscover the 'Billy Holiday of the East'. (MH)more
