The Cuban group Septeto Habanero is like an institution that cherishes the Cuban son and ensures its survival. On the occasion of its 80th anniversary the album "Celebrando sus 80 años" has been released. Since its founding in 1920, Septeto Habanero has enjoyed enormous popularity nationally and internationally. The group has known ever changing band members, but only three leaders. The guitarist
… and composer German Pedrito Ibañez has been leading the group since 1997. The predominantly over-sixties play his compositions and those of the singer Emilio Moret Lopez on this album. The son is a style that is based on the combination of Spanish guitar and singing traditions and African rhythms, and is also a link between Cuban rural folk music and urban popular music. Septeto Habanero helped give this genre its current form, for example by introducing a wind instrument, the trumpet. Just like the Buena Vista Social Club, Septeto Habanero proves with this album once again that old boys can make excellent swinging and lively music. They are even capable of giving about twenty concerts a month in the Netherlands and abroad. That says something about Septeto Habanero! (SvdP) _ That says something about Septeto Habanero!
