After living in the United States for 60 years, Leo Fuld returned to the Netherlands in 1994. He would record one more album. The Legend was the result of his work with producer Mohammed El-Fers and arranger Kees Post. They wanted to provide Fuld's Yiddish songs with Arabic arrangements. That sounds like an unlikely plan, but it was nothing new to Fuld. In the 1950s he had already performed in
… Lebanon and Egypt where he had worked with Arab orchestras. The result is special. The voice of eighties Fuld has barely lost its power. He is completely at ease with the material, they are the traditionals he has sung all his life. And the 'extra oriental' spiced arrangements show once again how strong old compositions like Mein Shtetele Belz, Oif'n Weg Steht Ein Boim and Wo Ahin Soll Ich Geh'n still are. (PdK)more
