Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys was a gifted composer and his songs are excellent for jazz adaptation. Guitarist / producer Tim Weston has dared to make a CD with performances by various jazz musicians, resulting in a fascinating and beautiful CD. The CD opens with "Surfer girl" in the performance of Don Grusin. Very short performances of five Wilson compositions are performed by the a capella
… formation Clark Burroughs Group (Clark Burroughs was the original lead tenor of the Hi Los); ao: I Went to Sleep and Til I Die. Soul singer Jeffrey Osborne can be heard together with Grusin, Rickert, Reyes, Sabal-Lecco and Weston with the famous Wouldn't It Be Nice; also known is God Only Knows, which is performed on this CD by Yellowjackets. Many lesser known compositions by Brian Wilson are included on this CD; the romantic side was given space, such as The Warmth Of The Sun (Shelby Flint), I Just Wasn't Made For These Tmes (Larry Carlton) and In My Room (Marilyn Scott). Notable are performances of Caroline No by Brazilian guitarist / singer Dori Caymmi and Our Sweet Love / Friends by pianist Eliane Elias. (JW)more
