The American band Mercury Rev has had many ups and downs since its foundation in 1989. Originally, the band consisted of six students at the University of Buffalo, NY. Their experimental noise was not understood by anyone and the band members constantly argued with managers, concert promoters and especially with each other. From 1995, however, a lot changed, especially with the departure of singer
… David Baker. This meant that multi-instrumentalist Jonathan Donahue became the new lead singer. The result was the CD (1998), a beautiful record with atmospheric, psychedelic music. From that moment on, Mercury Rev was praised by all connoisseurs. There was suddenly a new trend, including bands like and were part. A logical consequence was that expectations for the successor to Deserter's Songs were very high. All Is Dream, the fifth Mercury Rev album, lives up to those expectations completely. Even now the music sounds like a fairytale. It is all kinds of things at the same time: psychedelic, bombastic, dreamy and very sweet. In contrast to the predecessor, this time there are fewer 'real' songs on this CD. This time the atmosphere comes first. The beautifully arranged strings are more suitable for a romantic movie soundtrack than a pop album. Therefore, when you listen to All Is Dream, you will often think that you are dreaming. At such moments, however, brings the tearful, -like voice of Donahue you quickly get back to reality. And that is that Mercury Rev made one of the most beautiful dream pictures of 2001 with All Is Dream. (MvP)more
