In 1991 folk singer Luka Bloom reached an unprecedentedly large audience when he was programmed at the Pinkpop festival between Lenny Kravitz, Living Color and Primus. Armed with just an acoustic guitar, he managed to convince the entire audience and his name was immediately established in the Netherlands. Bloom's live reputation has been untouchable for years since. As one of the few folk singers,
… he was also able to incorporate elements of contemporary pop music into his style. The most appealing example in this respect was his cover version of I Need Love by rapper LL Cool J. His new album Between The Mountains And The Moon surprises with its introverted and quiet approach. Bloom has clearly changed since 1991 and now focuses on creating atmospheric listening songs and that takes some getting used to for those who know the man from his energetic live performances. Suddenly I notice that the voice of Bloom is actually not that special and the attention drops halfway through the record. Only in Rainbow Day can some of the old magic be heard. I do not know whether Luka Bloom will be satisfied, but one thing is certain: he no longer plays Pinkpop flat with this repertoire. (MS)more
