Skin was the singer and front woman of Skunk Anansie, which was disbanded in 2001. With her shiny bald head and a voice that lashed out more than once, she determined both the image and the sound of the British rock band. For her solo debut Fleshwounds, Skin has a new look and a new sound: no longer bald but a small tuft of hair on the head; no longer rock solid but pop with an alternative edge.
The eleven songs include Guy Chambers, best known for his successful collaboration with Robbie Williams, David Kosten (Faultline) and Marius de Vries (Madonna, U2, Björk, among others). And also among the guest musicians many well-known names can be found, such as Ben Christophers, Jacob Golden and also Fay Lovsky, who (by the way barely audible) 'plays' theramin in The Trouble With Me. Yet all these contributions cannot prevent Fleshwounds from actually being a bit disappointing. In the commercially sounding songs, the memory of Skunk Anansie is far away and Skin resembles any other singer in the genre. And for anyone familiar with Skin's musical past, that can be nothing but a disappointment. (IV)more
