Lou Rhodes wrote this album for two years, but recorded the songs within two weeks. That makes you feel like she's playing in your living room. Rhodes dedicated this CD to her sister Janey, who died way too young (43 years old) in 2007. In the most beautiful tribute, a song that bears her sister's name, she sounds vulnerable and courageous at the same time. It must leave many a listener with a lump
… in their throat. Luckily, Rhodes does more than mourn on One Good Thing. Take the title track, in which she opposes the media's culture of fear. That sounds angry, but One Good Thing is really a hopeful song. Like many of the other songs on this album, this song also floats on Rhodes' strumming guitar playing and the swelling violins reminiscent of the arrangements on Nick Drake's albums. One Good Thing is one of the best singer / songwriter albums of recent times. Intimate yet accessible to a wide audience. (PdK)more
