The American sisters Bianca and Sierra Cassady did not grow up together, but found each other in Paris at the beginning of this century. Here they created their own musical world called CocoRosie. On this the Cassadys have stripped their sound of any freaky rumble and replaced it with mainly solemn piano accompaniment and languid sequences and (hip-hop) beats. With that, the vocals suddenly fall into place, like stray radio waves full of surreal raps and nursery rhymes, ethereal opera sounds and bygone musical melodies. Gray Oceans has a homogeneous dark and sinister atmosphere, just as unearthly and elusive as the now intertwined sisters themselves who, with dirty, colored beards on the cover photo, seem averse to any role pattern.
