July is the sixth album in ten years by the American singer / songwriter Marissa Nadler. She is known for her dreamy songs, in the style - but slightly less commercial than those - of Katie Melua. Her sixth studio album is the most personal to date and is almost completely autobiographical. In the run-up to this album, Nadler struggled with heartbreak, insecurities and even considered stopping making
… music. July seems to be mainly an album that describes a processing process and for the singer means an end to a difficult period. It delivers a poignant dream folk with a number of beautiful songs such as Firecrackers and Nothing In My Heart in which Nadler sings the heartbreak away and at the same time describes the emptiness after a death in Drive and I've Got Your Name in a sublime way. In the final piece Nothing In My Heart she shakes off the doubts about ending her musical career and so you can breathe a sigh of relief. A seventh of Nadler's hand will undoubtedly come. (BvdV)more
