Many a rocker will scratch their heads when hearing Supermodel, Foster The People's second CD. The indie band around Mark Foster rivals any commercially minded rock band. Supermodel contains at least three hits and probably more. The number of weak numbers is nil. Take album opener Are You What You Want To Be ?, a rock stamper of the outside category. A lot of acts try hard to write such a catchy
… wordless chorus, but Mark Foster and producer Greg Kurstin (Sia, The Shins, Tegan & Sara) do it like no other. The song is not groundbreaking, but Supermodel does not have to rely on the new ideas. Foster The People imitates various other indie bands, such as Broken Bells (Nevermind) and Tame Impala (Pseudologia Fantastica), and knows how to match those groups with ease. The debut Torches (2011) hit America like a bomb, but only managed to charm the Dutch rock fan. Supermodel offers even better rock to dance to and dance to rock to and thus makes a promising new attempt. (JE)more
