A band reunion usually earns money, but anyone expecting an artistic revival of his old heroes is often disappointed. Fortunately, there are also exceptions to the rule. Faith No More was discontinued in 1999, but comes sixteen years later with an album that rivals their best work. Faith No More has always been an erratic group that was difficult to pin down to one style. Metal, indie rock, funk,
… avant-garde and easy listening colored the musical palette of the idiosyncratic men from San Francisco. On Sol Invictus, the group is at least as elusive as it was in their heyday, but the group seems to have only gotten better with age. Faith No More is still theatrical and contrary, but the songs are more subtle and slowly but surely get under the skin of the listener. Mike Patton is still a true voice artist who croonts as easily as roars. The musical universe of Faith No More depends on unpredictability, but that the group, after years of silence, would return so strongly is a very pleasant surprise. (PdK)more
