In the mid-1990s, a wave of optimism washed over Britain. After the gloomy 80s the economy picked up and countless British talents broke through in music, film, literature and sports. Musicians like Blur, Oasis and Suede even managed to conquer America with an utterly British sound. This first wave of 'Britpop' bands was soon followed, such as the young Supergrass that overwhelmed with a rock-solid
… debut. Especially on the first slope of I Should Coco the adrenaline blasts from the speakers with bright songs full of beautiful choirs. Songs like Strange Ones, Caught By The Fuzz, and Alright (which was also a hit in the Netherlands) are not inferior to the songs of their heroes The Undertones of The Jam. In the second half the trio from Oxford slows down a bit, but that is not at the expense of the songs. Funny detail is that I Should Coco, like many other legendary debut albums, was recorded in a short time (only two weeks). According to bassist Mick Quinn, almost everything was recorded live at once. That spontaneity still makes the album sparkle. (PdK)more
