Bob Dylan's Christian work has never been received with open arms. The audience that had enjoyed his protest songs so much was not really looking forward to his sermons. Dylan didn't make it easy for them either. Between 1979 and 1981 the singer / songwriter made not one, but three gospel albums. On stage, he even refused to play his old famous songs. Everyone needed to know he was converted. Yet
… it was not all 'weeping and gnashing of teeth'. Even the greatest atheist had to admit that Dylan sounded enthusiastic. There was wonderful music during this period. Trouble No More, which is filled with live recordings, is a revelation in that respect. Dylan took to the stage with giants like and . Legendary studio drummer went on tour because he was so moved by the gospel songs. Dylan even turned out to be a gifted singer during these concerts. The gospel choir - featuring and his future wife Carolyn Dennis - propelled him to great heights. Some 35 years later, it is a blessing to hear these recordings full of dedication and hope. (JE)more
