Big Thief-frontvrouw Adrianne Lenker has always felt attracted to nature and the possibilities that lie there for her music. The two albums Big Thief released in 2019,
UFOF and
Two Hands, were recorded in a densely forested area in Washington and the Chihuahua desert in Texas, respectively. After the European tour to promote Two Hands stranded by COVID-19, Lenker retreated to a barren mountain hut
… deep in Massachusetts. There the American with the tormented soul came so close to nature that she sometimes literally had to record her brand new songs in the mud. The result is there. Lenker sings beautifully, sparingly accompanied by a guitar, the rhythm of the rain on the wooden roof (in the gripping Come), the wind and birdsong (Zombie Girl). It makes Songs And Instrumentals (the latter refers to the two ambient-like pieces on the second CD) into a special picture. (RME)more
