With previous records by the American duo Tune-Yards, consisting of Nate Brenner and Merrill Garbus, you could count on an eclectic mix of lo-fi, world music, dance and post-punk. This time, singer and multi-instrumentalist Garbus wrote the lyrics from her own frustrations and anger, but at the same time wanted to turn them into a positive sound. For the recording process, the pair decided to
… emphasize the use of physical instruments instead of electronics. This results in a record that is a little less all over the place in terms of styles, but still contains a pleasant amount of whimsy. This time the explosiveness comes - besides Garbus' fiery vocals - mainly from the guitar and drumming, which unfolds in a psychedelic way. On Sketchy. the twosome gives a twist to their eccentric sound with subtle changes. (JvQ)more
