It took more than ten years before Natalie Imbruglia released another album of original material after
Come To Life (2009). After Come To Life the singer suffered from writer's block. Motherhood, among other things, brought her inspiration back. Firebird can be seen as a comeback album and the theme is the same. Many of the songs are about finding yourself (again), vulnerability and independence.
In terms of style, the Australian more or less taps into the same stuff as on her previous work. The production varies from uptempo electropop songs to soulful tracks and here and there a touch of rock is added. It's a familiar recipe, but one that Imbruglia knows how to work with. Despite the beaten path, the singer manages to put a renewed energy in her music. Firebird is more than a successful comeback. (JvQ)more
