When you consider how important Bob Dylan has been in pop history, it remains fascinating to see how it all started and how he started to make his mark on American music in the early 1960s as a cool milkie. Martin Scorcese already fathomed this in his acclaimed documentary (2006). The Other Side Of The Mirror is the perfect addition. Director Murray Lerner compiled the black and white images of
… Dylan at the Newport Folk Festival. It gives a beautiful picture of the folk scene from which Dylan rose from, primal friendly, early hippies like and with their belief in a better world, the power of acoustic music and of course the young Dylan who beautifully articulated their ideals in his Blowing In The Wind. But we also see Dylan outgrow this club, culminating in a (hectic) electric performance with a boob in 1965. With that, this carefully edited DVD has a kind of storyline, nourished by the seriousness of everyone involved. Essential Dylan material as well as music history. (MR)more
