No Direction Home, Martin Scorcese's unsurpassed 2006 documentary about Bob Dylan's early years, already features footage from Don't Look Back. In this black and white film from 1967, director DA Pennebaker - after opening with the famous text board clip of Subterranean Homesick Blues - follows the singer / songwriter in 1965 during a UK tour. It gives, often hilarious, backstage and hotel images
… of the young but self-confident Dylan who can be as lovable as they are insufferable. Famous include the scene in which he razes a toothless British journalist to the ground and how, during a drunken party in his hotel room, he is furious with someone who has thrown a glass out of the window. Pennebaker's camera is there like a fly on the wall. Meanwhile, Dylan (all alone) is doing a sold-out tour of mostly stately Victorian theaters, for frenzied fans all over England. The film only shows fragments of a few songs, but these were added in their entirety to the DVD version of this undisputed film classic. This beautifully packaged deluxe edition of Don't Look Back is very worthwhile. It has an extra DVD full of images that did not make it to the original film, but together almost form a feature film in itself. It also contains the illustrated pocket from 1968 in which the film (including lyrics) is written and a small book in which the music clip Subterranean Homesick Blues comes to life while leafing through.
