Fate condemned Lynyrd Skynyrd to be a band with two faces. You had the formation before 1977 and the one after. The plane crash of October 20, 1977 robbed the successful group of two band members. Only in 1987 decided the remaining members, supplemented by, among others, Johnny Van Zant, brother of the late singer Ronnie, to continue. On this DVD, we see both incarnations of the group at work in
… Germany. The first fourteen songs were recorded at the 1996 Loreley Festival. As a bonus we see three more songs that were recorded in the original line-up in Hamburg. The later Skynyrd is of course a bit balder and thicker, but also one piece of routine. The 1974 recordings show how mature the band sounded at the time, despite the fact that they were all in their early twenties. Moreover, the gaming fun splashes off the screen. Unfortunately, there is no more of that old stuff on this DVD. (PdK)more
