Thanks to the great success of The Dark Side Of The Moon, Pink Floyd had grown into one of the greatest bands on earth in the mid-1970s. It had consequences for the relationships within the quartet that had to fight so hard to achieve this success. Bassist / vocalist Roger Waters in particular struggled with his star status and the apathy of his fellow band members who, he thought, were more concerned
… with the millions he earned than with a follow-up to The Dark Side Of The Moon. It got him to muse on the troubled former frontman Syd Barrett and from this came the lyrics of the almost half hour clocking Shine On You Crazy Diamond. Cut in two, this song dominates the album Wish You Were Here, which was released in 1975. It shows Pink Floyd in all its epic and lyrical glory. Famous is the anecdote of the unexpected visit of the unrecognizable fat and bald Barrett, during the recording. The chilly sounding songs Welcome To The Machine and the Have A Cigar sung by Roy Harper are Waters' sighs to the music industry to which the group was chained against will and thanks. The poignantly melancholy title track sung by David Gilmour is another highlight in the group's oeuvre. For many Pink Floyd fans Wish You Were Here is their favorite record. It is certainly a worthy successor to The Dark Side Of The Moon. (MR) The poignantly melancholy title track sung by David Gilmour is another highlight in the group's oeuvre.
