Although he was fifteen years older than most of his fans and was basically an old rock-n'-roller, the punk crowd embraced Ian Dury. With his square head, lame leg, sharp sideburns and crazy motor skills, the singer also looked like a grim character from a Dickens novel. And although Dury was a purebred Brit in everything, his music was also popular across the Channel. This is evident from this show
… from 1978, recorded by the acclaimed German TV show Rockpalast. It takes a while for Ian and his Blockheads to get going, but then the group turns out to be a smooth machine. Ian is also looking forward to it and chats between songs in a kind of home-brewed German, although his jokes hit the stiff audience to death. The bluesy rock-n'-roll of The Blockheads looks a bit dated in 2012, yet this is an entertaining show by a group of passionate musicians. (PdK)more
