The young Jimmy Page was a much sought-after session guitarist in the London beat scene of the 1960s. He was also the last in the line of super guitarists (Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck) to sprout from The Yardbirds. When this group fell apart in 1968, Page formed a new line-up that, like The New Yardbirds, had to comply with a contractual tour in Scandinavia. Legend has it that the four members - Page,
… bassist / keyboardist John Paul Jones, drummer John Bonham and vocalist Robert Plant, knew during the first rehearsal, when starting the Yardbirds song Dazed And Confused, that they had something magical in their hands. although Plant later admitted that he was not at all comfortable. Led Zeppelin, into which they were soon renamed, consisted of four gifted musicians, as a collective once again rising above itself to sometimes mythical proportions. The first album, which was completed in thirty-six hours and was released in early 1969, already bears witness to this. The unwieldy and dynamic blues rock of songs such as Babe I'm Gonna Leave You and Good Times Bad Times are supported by a lazily popping and grooving rhythm section and the heavy riffs of Page, accompanied by the smooth and driven screams of Plant. Not only a successful debut but also a harbinger of the hard rock and metal that would flourish during the seventies.
