After the failure of Let It Be, The Beatles decided to put aside the differences of opinion one more time and make a good record. They succeeded wonderfully, during the recording of Abbey Road no discord was heard and the album contains some of the most beautiful songs from their oeuvre. Although the record is surprisingly coherent, it already gently shows the contours of the solo careers of the
… individual band members. Paul McCartney would later on albums such as Band On The Run and Venus & Mars elaborate on the medley of side B. With Come Together and I Want You (She's So Heavy), John Lennon gives a taste of the stripped-down rock from his first solo albums. But the biggest revelation was the contributions of George Harrison, who signed for the highlights of the record with Something and Here Comes The Sun. It was not surprising then that it was his solo career that was (initially) the most successful. Above all, Abbey Road was a triumph for George Martin; the production was to die for and his orchestral arrangements anticipated the symphonic rock of the seventies. Abbey Road was a worthy farewell to what are widely regarded as the greatest band of all time. (MS)more
