Gesyncopeerde, strak gespeelde dansmuziek, eind jaren zestig voortgekomen uit een samengaan van eerdere zwarte muziekvormen als jazz, rhythm & blues en soul. Het ritme, vastgelegd in de groove, en met een hoofdrol voor de basgitaar, is allesoverheersend. James Brown wordt vaak aangewezen als een van de eerste soulartiesten die de groove een prominente rol gaf. Bands als Parliament en Sly & The Family Stone werkten deze stijl verder uit. Naast ritmische kenmerken deelt funk ook het gebruik van bijzondere akkoorden met de jazz. Funk had grote invloed op hiphop en r&b, maar ook bij rockartiesten zoals de Red Hot Chili Peppers en Living Colour hoor je duidelijke funkinvloeden terug.
Soul ontstaat in de jaren zestig als mengsel van rhythm & blues en gospel. De meeste soulzangers uit de jaren zestig leren zingen in kerkkoren en de overeenkomsten tussen soul- en gospelzangers zijn opvallend. Labels als Motown (uit Detroit) en Stax (uit Memphis) zijn in de jaren zestig erg succesvol. De eerste met het bombastische geluid van vocale groepen als The Supremes en The Four Tops. De producties van zuidelijke labels als Stax (Otis Redding) en Atlantic (James Brown, Aretha Franklin) klinken bluesier en meer funky. Bij soul fungeert de zanger of zangeres als blikvanger en moeten de begeleiders vaak genoegen nemen met een plaatsje buiten de spotlichten. In de jaren zeventig overleeft soul vooral in Engeland waar nachtenlange ‘northern soul’-feesten vele bezoekers trekken. De ‘blue eyed soul’ van Britse artiesten als Simply Red en Sade is in de jaren tachtig enorm populair en de voorbode van de revival van het authentieke soulgeluid die zich rond 2005 aandient met artiesten als Amy Winehouse en Duffy. Soul was ook van grote invloed op funk, disco, r&b en vooral neo soul (een mix van soul, r&b en hiphop).
De term rhythm & blues werd in 1948 bedacht door platenbaas Jerry Wexler als vervanging van de dubieuze term ‘race music’. Dat was een overkoepelende term voor alle muziek van Afro-Amerikaanse origine. Vanaf de jaren veertig werd rhythm & blues een stijlaanduiding voor muziek die elementen uit jazz, blues, boogie-woogie en gospel samensmolt. Daarmee is het de voorloper van latere genres als soul en rock-‘n-roll. Rhythm & blues deelt de doorleefde voordracht met soulmuziek, terwijl het opzwepende ritme en de realistische teksten een voorbode zijn van de rock’-n’roll. In Engeland is het in de jaren zestig de benaming voor groepen als The Rolling Stones, The Animals en Cream. Het geluid van deze Britse groepen was meer gitaar georiënteerd en daardoor harder dan die van hun zwarte voorgangers. Vanaf de jaren zeventig werd het gangbaar om die afsplitsing ‘rock’ te noemen.
