The unusual theme of this Texan mover cum singer / songwriter may be considered well known. No sweet love songs but a lot of death, destruction, illness and adultery, practiced by illustrious types like Brother Jim, recorded in ten songs and played in a nice trashy country rock style. Johnny Dowd's permanent band in 2004 consists of just two people: Dowd and drummer Brian Wilson (the latter being
… just a namesake of the famous Beach Boy). For this record guest musician Justin Asher provided some background vocals and keyboard parts. Much of the so-called 'alternative' country is quite traditional on closer inspection. Not so Johnny Dowd's music. Although he uses the same musical tradition, he then distorts it, without much exaggerated respect, into a unique sound. And that produces another exciting picture with Cemetery Shoes. (MS)more
