With the release of Life Journey (2014), Leon Russel has been showing his skills as a songwriter for over fifty years. Thanks to work as a session musician for Bob Dylan, The Beach Boys and Frank Sinatra, and a stack of solo records, Leon Russell grew into a legend, although he was in danger of being forgotten after the turn of the century. Elton John pulled his career out of the doldrums again in
… 2010 by recording The Union with him. The British pianist urged him to pick up the thread again and that has resulted in this surprising album. Russell describes the record as a musical journey through his life in which he reflects on the things he has achieved, but also in which he has failed. He pleasantly covers material from Robert Johnson, Hoagy Carmichael and Billy Joel. The senior is accompanied on most of the songs by wind players, who provide the necessary power when his age threatens to interfere with him. (BvdV)more
