"Willy was an excellent musician, but unfortunately he was also a junkie." That was the tenor of the obituaries that appeared after the death of Willy DeVille on August 6, 2009. On this DVD / CD we can see and hear how good Willy was, because it contains a performance from 1982. Willy (who then played under the group name Mink DeVille) was then at its creative peak. The camera sits close to Willy's
… transparent skin: sweat beads on his tight suit, he grins his gold teeth and his earrings glisten in the light of the cameras. If this DVD proves anything, it's that Mink DeVille was an excellent live band with Willy as the unmistakable and bluffing centerpiece. That bluff is justified. The band smoothly combines rock and roll, rhythm & blues, rock, soul and salsa and does so with New York bravado. This DVD gives occasional glimpses into Willy's turbulent lifestyle, but much more often you can witness his undeniable musical talent. A nice farewell letter, this DVD. (PdK)more
