'We're just here to have some fun,' the vital and youthful-looking John Fogerty calls out to the audience in the intimate TV studio of the Austin City Limits program. In 2004 he undoubtedly played here to promote his new album Deja Vu (All Over Again). But that should be accompanied by fun and he does his audience a favor by playing a large handful of Creedence Clearwater Revival classics. For years,
… Fogerty refused to do this because the rights to it belonged to his former record label. But now that this, after many lengthy lawsuits, has been settled, he plays songs like Proud Mary and Green River with fire again. Fogerty visibly enjoys this and especially with his biting guitar solos he enraptures the audience (which is visibly old enough to have ever moaned CCR on their school bags). But Fogerty also regularly puts on an acoustic guitar for the more country & western-tinted repertoire from his solo era. A solid band follows him in a disciplined and subdued way in these more subdued songs. Fogerty has an excellent voice, the atmosphere is good and he enjoys it a lot; this DVD has nothing more (but no less) to offer. (MR)more
