Benjamin Britten geldt als de belangrijkst Britse componist uit de tweede helft van de vorige eeuw. Opmerkelijk genoeg legde hij zich toe op de opera, een genre dat, in zijn actuele vorm althans, op sterven na dood was halverwege de vorige eeuw. Brittens bijdragen echter – o.a. Peter Grimes, The Rape of Lucretia, Gloriana, The Turn of The Screw, Death in Venice – wisten repertoire te houden tot op de dag van vandaag. In veel deze producties was een hoofdrol weggelegd voor Brittens artistieke partner en levensgezel Peter Pears. Voor deze tenor schreef Britten tevens prachtige liederen, waaronder de Serenade voor tenor, hoorn en strijkorkest. Ook op andere terreinen is het niveau van Brittens muziek hoog. Hij was nog geen twintig jaar oud toen hij de briljante Phantasy voor hobokwartet schreef. Vriendschap met de legendarische cellist Rostropovich leidde in de jaren ’60 tot een Cellosonate, drie Suites voor cello solo en een Symfonie voor cello en orkest. Master of the Queen's Music is Britten nooit geworden, hoewel hij beslist voeling had met publieke sentimenten. Zo onderwees deze pacifist zijn volk in de wereldvrede middels het War Requiem uit 1962. Britten was een uitstekend interpreet van eigen werk, net als Bartók en Stravinski.
