Ex-Beatle Paul McCartney's solo albums are notorious for their inconsistency. After the extremely successful world tour of 2003, he was determined to make an album of which he did not have to hide the songs live. In searching for a suitable producer for his new studio record, McCartney sought advice from his longtime mentor George Martin, the now-retired Beatles producer. He recommended Nigel Godrich,
… who is best known for his collaboration with Radiohead. At the insistence of Godrich, McCartney himself played almost all the instruments on this record, just as he did on some of his better solo albums McCartney I and II, Ram and Band On The Run. On Chaos And Creation In The Backyard we hear Macca draw from his no small box of tricks as usual. From the beautiful acoustic plucked song Jenny Wren and the baroque piano song English Tea to the psychedelic soundscapes in the instrumental 'ghost track' that follows the orchestral closing song Anyway. We've all heard it from him before but McCartney didn't sound that inspired for a long time. (MS)more
