Mercury Rev's ninth album evokes mixed feelings. On the one hand you can hear the enthusiasm of the American group. Clearly, after 25 years, the band is still looking forward to it. On the other hand, you also hear the effort it takes to still sound fresh after such a long time. Mercury Rev wants to, but cannot always convince. The band consists of only two people on The Light In You: singer Jonathan
… Donahue and instrumentalist Grasshopper. Together with a large group of guests they manage to create a bombastic sound. This sound alone makes Mercury Rev stand out. But behind all layers of instruments and vocals there must also be a good song. The shoe pinches there now and then. Low point is the Rainy Day Record in which Donahue recalls all the bands he likes to play on a rainy day. Let that be a situation where other Mercury Rev records are much better suited for. (JE)more
